Will Smith has been criticized heavily in the media following the Chris Rock slap at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. In the months since, both he and Rock have remained pretty quiet about the experience, with some carefully planned soundbites here and there. Rock is opening up a bit more in recent days and saying some troubling things that has fans feeling like maybe he deserves a second smackdown for his off-color humor.
Will Smith took a massive hit following the Oscar slap. For starters, the incident very heavily overshadowed his win that evening for Best Actor in King Richard. In addition to this, the public really turned their backs on him and his wife. Jada was blamed by many who believed she egged her husband on or put forth some kind of energy that made him feel that he needed to do something extreme for her honor. Jada made it clear in an episode of Red Table Talk that the incident was not her doing, and Will has also doubled down in apologies where he stated he was purely acting on his own accord.

Chris Rock received a more positive response from fans who felt like the comedian was unfairly treated. Despite Rock making a joke about Jada’s alopecia which was in very poor taste, many fans still felt he did not deserve to be slapped and disrespected on such a public stage. Rock initially denied to speak on what happened, claiming he needed time to process the incident. Eventually, he slipped some jokes in during his tour with Kevin Hart, comparing Will Smith to Suge Knight and even downplaying the smack saying that he went right back to work the following day.
Chris is getting more and more comfortable joking about what happened and recently slipped a new joke into his set that has fans very upset. Rock recently revealed that he was invited to host the 2023 Oscar ceremony but declined. During a show in Pheonix, Arizona, he quipped about how returning to the Oscar stage would be like “asking Nicole Brown Simpson to go back to the restaurant.” Nicole Brown Simpson is the ex-wife of NFL legend OJ Simpson who’s life was taken in 1994 following a night out with 25-year-old restaurant waiter Ron Goldman.
Nicole Brown Simpon’s sister learned about the joke and immediately condemned Chris Rock. Despite being a fan of Chris Rock, Tanya Brown doesn’t think comparing a double homicide to a slap makes sense and wants him to do better. She also warns Chris Rock that these kind of jokes are hurtful to the family of both individuals.
People took to Twitter to call out Chris Rock for the tasteless joke. “Nicole Brown Simpson‘s memory being one big joke as if she wasn’t literally murdered after leaving an abusive partner just shows that not even murdered victims of domestic violence get peace,” said one person. Another said, “Nicole Brown Simpson [life was taken]. How is that in any way comparable to being slapped?’
Others are calling out the hypocrisy in outrage due to Nicole being a white woman. “We BET NOT see ANYONE traumatized, upset, shaken, disturbed, outraged, etc. over Chris Rock’s statement involving Nicole Brown Simpson. It’s just jokes, remember?”
It seems this joke was enough to remind fans that all jokes cannot simply be dismissed in the spirit of humor, and many want Will Smith to lay hands on Rock again. “I’ve been on Will Smith’s side from the start and I’d fully support him slapping Chris Rock again,” tweeted one person. Another posted, “The more Chris Rock talks, the more you begin to see why Will Smith smacked fire outta him.” Do you think this latest blowback will help get fans back on Will’s side? Was Chris Rock out of line?
