Mo’Nique and DL Hughley have been going at it for days now following some fallout from a comedy show they did together. The two have had some choice words for one another, with Mo’Nique calling out Hughley for breach of contracts while DL has maintained his innocence and leaned into existing reports of Mo’Nique being difficult. Things have begun to get personal as Mo’Nique has dragged DL’s father and dog into the situation as a way to poke holes in his story.
DL Hughley and Mo’Nique have been pulling receipts for days, trying to defend their different accounts of what transpired. According to Mo’Nique, DL breached a contract they agreed on to ensure that he appeared as the headliner of the comedy show they did. DL defends himself and says that Mo is clearly the problem and that she and her husband have an issue doing business.
This led to a war of words where Mo’Nique brought up DL’s late father, Charles Ronald Hughley. Charles passed away in 2018 with his son by his side. An emotional DL took to Twitter at the time and said, “My father has passed! He was there and held me when I took my first breath. I was there and held him when he took his last! I’ve never known a stronger man! Love u, old man!” DL struggled with the passing of his father, so to help him cope, his family brought him a dog. The dog was special because it was born in the same place DL’s father was from and helped him by providing emotional support.
In a video from January of 2020, a surprised DL can be seen reacting to the gift as his family brought the dog to the radio station to meet him. The caption read, “DL Hughley gets a new dog, and his reaction is so cute @realdlhughley.” A shocked DL immediately jumped out of his seat and kept repeating, “you got me a dog!? You got me a DOG!” before immediately dropping to his knees to look at the dog and proclaim how beautiful he was. DL would eventually name the dog after his father.
In all her anger during their back and forth, Mo’Nique brought up the dog and DL’s grief as a way to say that he is not mentally stable and possibly an alcoholic.“ANYONE WHO COMES ON STAGE SLURRING BECAUSE THEY May HAVE HAD TO MUCH ALCOHOL TO DRINK AND NEED A SUPPORT DOG LIKE YOURSELF, IS A PERSON THAT HAS THE TYPE OF CONCERNS THAT SHOULD KEEP THEM FROM TALKING NEGATIVELY ABOUT ANYONE BECAUSE YOU KNOW THE ISSUES YOUR DEALING WITH IN ORDER TO NEED A SUPPORT DOG.”
DL and fans fired back, feeling the jab was unnecessary. In his own post, DL said, “I don’t have a dog to keep people away from me. I have a dog, so I have my father with me all the time. That is an act of love, which you know very little about.” He goes on to say that Mo’Nique has taken uncalled for jabs at his family, sexuality, and career in an attempt to make herself look better. He continued, “You have the temerity to assault someone’s sexuality, a man sexuality given who you lay next to. None of that had anything to do with the alleged content dispute, you could have taken that out with a lawyer you would have gotten out you could have not gotten going on stage. “
During a live with her husband, Mo’Nique tried to clarify her remarks and said that she was speaking from a place of concern for DL Hughley. She feels that if DL really loved and honored his father, that he would not mess with people who are not messing with him. She goes on to question if his father taught him how to respect other people or to treat them how he wants to be treated. “You treated Mo’Nique how you wanna be treated. You talked stuff to [me] for years, and then Saturday night you got tender,” she said directly to DL while talking to her fans.
The comedian then blasted other comedians who had joined the conversation and accused them of showing young people that this behavior is ok. “What are we teaching them?” she asked the audience. Mo’Nique maintains that her sole concern is educating young people coming up behind her so that they do not get taken advantage of the way she feels she has throughout her career.
