John Boyega says he ‘only dates Black’ as he opens up on his rules for dating

John Boyega has opened up on his love life, saying he ‘only dates Black’ and revealing his rules for dating as he juggles his private and public lives.

While his professional career continues to go from strength to strength, the actor revealed in a recent interview with GQ that he has his own set of rules for dating and romance.

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens star explained what he was looking for in a potential partner and the safeguards he’s got to take to keep his private life separate from his very public career.

He said: “I only date Black, then it’s about chemistry, personality, goals. Is there a synergy? Can I help you? Can you help me?”

Boyega went on to explain that his dating life was done in such a way as to guarantee his privacy, describing himself as ‘very disciplined in the type of women I speak to’.

He also said that his biggest inspiration for the type of relationship he wants is none other than his mum and dad, saying: “There’s nothing that this world can do in terms of pressure to make me be inspired by anything else but my parents.”

The 30-year-old has previously spoken about how letting his private and professional worlds collide has made dating difficult.

While doing promotion for Star Wars: The Force Awakens on The Graham Norton Show, Boyega explained that he’d been given the advice to ‘try and secure the love of your life’ before becoming a major movie star.

However, he told a tale of a relationship ending when his date asked what he did for a living and pointing to a Star Wars poster where he featured heavily, saying the revelation ‘affected her kind of stance’.

Shooting to fame with 2011 alien invasion movie Attack the BlockBoyega then became a global star for his role as Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Boyega called the role an ‘amazing opportunity’, but has also spoken about his character being ‘pushed to the side’ as time went on and of the abuse he suffered on social media.

Away from the big screen he’s also known for being a vocal and fearless advocate against racism.

Two years ago, he took a gamble to do the right thing and gave a powerful speech at a Black Lives Matter demonstration where he broke down in tears as he told a crowd of thousands of his support for victims George Floyd, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin and Stephen Lawrence.

During his impassioned speech Boyega said ‘I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this, but f**k that’, though many in the film industry spoke up in support of his words and praised him for speaking out.
