Gray lost his parents a few years back and, ever since, he has been taking care of his brother and the household. They lost their grandfather soon after their parents’ demise, reported PEOPLE.

During an interview with Click2Houston, Gray said, “I love it, I’m speechless, way more than we asked for. Completely grateful.” He explained that he had promised his mother that he would take care of his brother and added this gift would help him keep the promise. “[I] try my best to keep him in check, make sure he doesn’t get in trouble, and make sure he’s loved,” he said.

The house was in need of serious renovations to make it liveable for the two brothers, after having suffered damages from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and winter storms in 2021. “At one point, I was just done with the house. I was ready to sell it at one point. It was too much weight on my shoulders. I couldn’t do it,” Gray said about the condition of his house.

The renovation took almost three months, following which the Lakewood Church, situated in Houston, offered to furnish the new home for the boys. After all the struggles the two have been through, the community stepped in to make their lives a little better and to let them know that they aren’t alone in this journey.

“There’s just no way they could’ve lived in it and probably would’ve never fixed it,” said Katy Responds Executive Director Ron Peters in the video released by KPRC. They expressed their happiness on their website, saying, “What a Celebration! We were able to welcome home Jaylan and his brother Julian back to their home that was destroyed and unlivable after the winter storm.”

The heartfelt gesture by the organization and its volunteers changed Gray’s and his 12-year-old brother’s lives. “It makes me so happy to see that there are good people, I just like the way we’ve been treated. I didn’t think anything good would happen,” Julian said.

A Texas community stepped up to help two brothers with much-needed renovations to their Katy home.

According to NBC affiliate KPRC, 22-year-old Jaylan Gray has been raising his 12-year-old brother, Julian, since losing their parents and grandfather over the last few years. The brothers found themselves in need of help after their home was damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and a series of winter storms last year.

“At one point, I was just done with the house,” Jaylan said, according to the news station. “I was ready to sell it at one point. It was too much weight on my shoulders. I couldn’t do it.”

Katy Responds, an organization that assists Texas families after disasters, contacted the brothers and said they would repair the home with the help of kind-hearted volunteers.
